NZ Post is making history after purchasing the first hydrogen-powered truck in New Zealand – the first of five Hyundai XCIENT fuel cell trucks to be rolled out across its fleet.

This is a significant milestone, with green hydrogen an important pathway for decarbonising the heavy transport industry, which makes up 25% of all transport emissions in New Zealand.

BOC is proud to be part of NZ Post’s journey, supplying the green hydrogen used to fuel this zero emission hydrogen truck. Replacing its diesel counterpart, the Hyundai XCIENT is expected to save 170 tonnes of CO2 per year from being emitted into the environment.

Vesna Olles, Director Clean Energy Business Development and Strategy at BOC South Pacific said New Zealand’s first hydrogen truck was a significant milestone that would pave the way for decarbonisation of the heavy vehicle industry.

This is an important first step as we develop the hydrogen industry and infrastructure to support further roll-out of zero emission hydrogen vehicles across New Zealand.”

Hyundai’s XCIENT fuel cell trucks is the world's first, mass produced fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck, which has recorded a cumulated range of 4 million km with 47 trucks running in Switzerland.
